Three Holiday Home Maintenance Tips to Make Your Thanksgiving Dinner Even More Enjoyable

Thanksgiving is almost here, ushering in the holiday season and all the fun traditions that come with it! If you are looking forward to roasting a turkey, baking cookies, decorating, or even just enjoying the colder weather, you are not alone.

But no one looks forward to dealing with some of the issues that can crop up during this busy season, especially when they prevent you from fulfilling your holiday wishes. One of those is broken kitchen appliances. Don’t let household dilemmas ruin your festivities: Use these holiday home maintenance tips to make sure your holiday season is as magical as possible.

Deep Clean Your Appliances before the Big Day

The first step to have a smooth holiday in the kitchen is deep cleaning your appliances. In a survey of more than 381,000 appliances, Consumer Reports calculated that 6 percent of respondents reported problems with cooking elements not lighting or heating up on ranges, while 5 percent of people reported refrigerators that didn’t cool properly. An even larger 11 percent of people said their dishwashers stopped properly cleaning.

Many of those issues can be avoided or at least improved with a little attention. Your fridge is a great place to start. Pull it out from the wall and clean out the dust from the mechanical coils . Your fridge will work more efficiently, and you don’t have to worry about it heating up and melting your treats. Next, you can deep clean your oven and stove top, making sure all heating elements or gas burners heat and ignite fully. And don’t forget about your dishwasher; clean it by setting a single dishwasher-safe cup of white vinegar on the top rack and running a full cycle. These extra steps will clear your path to festive fun in the kitchen.

Cook a Tester Meal Beforehand

The best way to make sure you don’t run into any unexpected problems on the day of your small holiday gathering is to cook a test meal beforehand. A couple weeks before the holiday, turn all your appliances on and whip up some delicious dishes—either the ones you plan to make for the holidays or just something you are craving.

If anything is not working right, you will know well in advance and have time to schedule a maintenance appointment before the day of your small event. With a little bit of foresight, nothing is stopping you from having the perfect holidays.
